The challenge<\/p>\n

Ulcerative Colitis is invisible to the naked eye. VR made it visible.<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n
\n

Ulcerative Colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease whose pathogenesis unfolds at the microscopic level: in the epithelial cells lining the gut mucosa, in the cascade of immune responses that cause chronic inflammation, and in the systemic consequences that extend beyond the colon itself.<\/p>\n

For physicians and gastroenterologists, truly understanding what happens inside the gut during a UC episode requires a leap of imagination that textbooks, diagrams, and 2D medical illustrations can only partially support.<\/p>\n

Janssen came to Fourthedesign to build a VR experience that would take physicians inside the body. Not as a metaphor. As an immersive, spatial, medically structured learning experience.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

We built two worlds: the patient environment and the microscopic disease mechanism.<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

Macro lifestyle environment<\/h3>\n

At the macro level, we created a Western lifestyle environment populated by sedentary character models, processed food consumption, limited physical activity, and urban stressors such as pollution. These clinical risk factors became a world the physician could inhabit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Animated clinical characters<\/h3>\n

Characters were fully rigged and animated, not placed as static props. Their movement, posture, and presentation supported the educational narrative and helped communicate the lifestyle and systemic context around UC.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Gut mucosa microenvironment<\/h3>\n

At the micro level, the experience transitions into the gut mucosa itself. Epithelial cell dysfunction, disruption of tight junctions, inflammatory infiltrate, and mucosal inflammation are presented in real-time 3D at a scale impossible in conventional media.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Clinically reviewed storytelling<\/h3>\n

Storyboards were developed before production and iterated against medical reference. Visual decisions were treated as clinical decisions, because in medical VR, inaccurate anatomy or misleading visuals can change the educational meaning.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n
